Dog containment systems buying guide
Invisible dog fences and containment systems are great tool for training dogs inside an area that can be adjusted at the touch of a button. They are a useful alternative to fences, which dogs can sometimes jump over or dig under. They can also be used in conjunction with fences! We have resources on our website to help with understanding how they work and how to set them up, so now let’s look at a few different containment solutions so you can decide what type of containment system is best for you!
Components
Containment systems generally involve a transmitter box, copper wire, and an e-collar or collars (if running multiple dogs). The PAC Invisible Dog Fence Transmitter is a great transmitter for setting up your own system, with the standard model working on areas up to 5 acres, and the boosted model up to 15 acres.
Wire can be bought in 100m and 200m lengths from the DogMaster website. Make sure the gauge of your wire is suited to the recommendation on your transmitter.
Collars should be chosen carefully to suit the size and temperament of the dog. For smaller dogs, the Barkmate DF112 is great for dogs from 4kg and up. For larger, more stubborn dogs around 7kg and up, the Dogtra 3500 might be a better fit. You can browse more collar options here.
